Air Balancing in Middle Tennessee
Find the Cause of Uneven Temperatures & Airflow
Air balancing starts with finding out why rooms served by the same HVAC system don’t feel the same. Griffin Mechanical, LLC evaluates equipment performance, airflow, electrical components, and home insulation before presenting repair or replacement options that address the source of the comfort problem.
We’ve provided residential and commercial heating, air conditioning, and plumbing services since 2001. Our licensed, bonded, insured, and highly trained technicians serve Middle Tennessee homeowners who need practical answers for uneven room temperatures and inconsistent HVAC airflow.

Signs Your Home May Need Air Balancing
Rooms that remain noticeably warmer or cooler than the thermostat setting are a common sign of an airflow imbalance. The difference may be most apparent on upper floors, in rooms farther from a single thermostat, or in spaces that receive more direct sunlight.
Airflow at the vents can provide another clue. A supply vent that barely moves air may leave one room uncomfortable, while excessive airflow from another can create drafts and temperature swings. These differences warrant a professional HVAC evaluation rather than repeated thermostat adjustments.
Common comfort and airflow concerns include:
- Inconsistent temperatures between rooms served by the same system.
- Weak airflow from particular supply vents.
- Excessive airflow or noticeable drafts near certain registers.
- HVAC cycles that run longer while some rooms remain uncomfortable.
- Temperature differences between floors or rooms with different sun exposure.
Uneven distribution can make HVAC equipment run longer as it tries to satisfy the thermostat. The effect on energy use depends on the system, the home, and the cause of the imbalance, which is why diagnosis comes before airflow adjustments.
Our Air Balancing Process in Middle Tennessee
We begin by listening to where and when the comfort differences occur, then schedule a visit to evaluate the system. We strive to provide same-day scheduling for all calls whenever possible, and weekend appointments are available.
During the evaluation, our technicians may measure total blower airflow, static pressure, and air movement at supply registers and return grilles. Static pressure is the resistance air encounters as it moves through the ductwork.
The diagnostic process focuses on:
- Equipment: Checking the HVAC system for conditions related to the comfort complaint.
- Airflow: Evaluating how conditioned air moves through supply vents and returns through the system.
- Electrical Components: Inspecting relevant components as part of the broader system diagnosis.
- Home Insulation: Considering whether the building envelope contributes to room-to-room temperature differences.
When the existing system and ductwork are suitable for adjustment, air balancing modifies supply and return airflow to distribute conditioned air more evenly. After identifying the cause, we provide the available repair or replacement options with up-front, no-hassle competitive pricing for review before work begins.
Air Balancing, Duct Cleaning & Ductwork Repair
Air balancing, duct cleaning, and ductwork service address different conditions. The appropriate service depends on whether the problem involves airflow settings, accumulated material inside the ducts, or the physical condition and design of the ductwork.
Air Balancing
Air balancing measures and adjusts airflow through an existing HVAC system. It can fine-tune supply and return airflow when the equipment and ducts are sound, but it can’t correct ductwork that leaks or is too small for the required airflow.
Duct Cleaning
This service removes accumulated material from duct interiors. It doesn’t measure airflow or adjust the amount of conditioned air delivered to individual rooms, so it serves a different purpose from air balancing.
Ductwork Repair or Replacement
Duct installation or replacement changes the physical duct network, while air balancing adjusts airflow through existing ducts. Inadequate or poorly maintained ductwork can contribute to air leaks, weak airflow, and uneven temperatures.
Duct leakage can be substantial. Typical homes may lose an estimated 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through ducts because of leaks and poorly connected sections. Air balancing can’t recover air escaping from damaged ductwork, so we offer a ductwork inspection before recommending replacement.
Opening or closing registers alone may not address the underlying problem. Measurements and a system evaluation help determine whether the appropriate next step is an airflow adjustment, HVAC repair, or work on the ducts themselves.
